Tuckaway Farm imports premium organic extra-virgin olive oil from the medieval town of Città della Pieve in western Umbria, where Amy-Louise and Mike lived and grew olives for four years. The groves from which the olives are grown belong to Eros Mercuriali and Gianluigi Matturri, who also own the mills that do the pressing. This is extremely high-quality, organically pressed extra-virgin olive oil from organic olives in the Colli Orvietani (the Orvieto Hills, the olive production zone within which Città della Pieve lies). Recognized as one of the great olive oil-producing areas in the world, Umbrian oil has been given the DOP (Name of Origin Protected; like DOC wines) classification by the European Union (www.umbriadoc.com). The olives from which this oil was produced were harvested by hand, were treated carefully during the time they were off the tree (held in open crates, not more than half full), were brought to the mill for pressing within twenty-four hours, and—most importantly—were subjected to a maximum temperature of 72ºF. The maximum acidity of extra-virgin olive oil allowable is, by internationally agreed standards, 0.8% free oleic acid. Tuckaway Farm’s olive oil has an acidity of 0.13%, or less than one-sixth the maximum. This combination of extraordinarily low acidity and careful handling and processing results in a great olive oil.
